Volpi Foods wins “Ready-to-Eat Product of the Year” in the 2022 Mindful Awards program

We understand the importance of implementing sustainability initiatives, which is why we are committed to both our Raised Responsibly standards and our eco-friendly packaging options – Lorenza Pasetti, CEO of Volpi

The 2022 Mindful Rewards Program, an independent recognition platform spotlighting conscious companies and products that are consciously making waves in the ever-expanding world of consumer packaged goods, announced today that Volpi Foodsthe family-run specialty deli meat producer based in St. Louis since 1902, was selected as the winner of the “Ready-to-Eat Product of the Year” award.

Volpi Foods’ Raised Responsibly™ standards ensure animal welfare that allows natural and free movement, with no gestation crates and no added hormones. The company is committed to sourcing only from neighboring farms employing these environmentally friendly practices and to working with suppliers to adopt additional restrictions that provide a better environment for the animals and a higher quality product. Volpi produces its charcuterie according to traditional methods, allowing time to develop the delicate flavors and textures of each product.

Plus, Volpi’s packaging reflects the same dedication and care. In 2021, Volpi converted its entire pre-sliced range to paper-based Eco-Pack™ – a first for the pre-sliced meat industry. Its renewable structure is distinctive, functional and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), guaranteeing that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests.

The material uses paper rather than continuous plastic as its base, married to a thin layer of EVOH that provides the shelf life needed to sell products in grocery stores across the country. The paper is curbside recyclable once separated from the thin liner. Additionally, Eco-Pack™ packaging retains the shelf life of previous plastic packaging, so there is no net increase in food waste resulting from switching to paper-based packaging.

“We are thrilled to be the recipient of this particular accolade from the Mindful Awards program. For Volpi, sustainability is a holistic initiative that begins at the source and continues from production to sale and packaging. We understand the importance of implementing sustainability initiatives, which is why we are committed to both our Raised Responsibly standards and our eco-friendly packaging options,” said Lorenza Pasetti, CEO of Volpi. “As we we are committed to responsible practices, the aim when creating Volpi’s Eco-Pack packaging was to reduce the use of single-use plastic – and the new packaging does just that. By adopting a new look that puts sustainability measures, both in terms of animal welfare and packaging, at the forefront of product labels, Volpi Foods is acting for a more sustainable and transparent future for people and society. planet.

In calendar year 2021, Volpi’s switch to Eco-Pack™ diverted over 45 tons of single-use plastic.

The mission of the Mindful Awards program is to honor conscious companies and products that do what is good for people and the planet. Recognize the best of transparent, fair trade, natural, organic, sustainable, healthy and delicious products. This year’s program attracted more than 1,650 applications from companies around the world. All nominations are evaluated by an independent panel of consumer packaged goods industry experts, with winning products and companies selected based on a variety of criteria, ranging from brand principles, environmental impact, health, taste and transparency.

“Demand for pre-sliced meats has exploded, but there are very few sustainable alternatives to the single-use plastic packaging that plagues delicatessens. Today, the world is striving to reduce the effect of plastic by embracing more sustainable packaging options,” said Travis Grant, Managing Director of Mindful Awards. “Volpi’s Eco-Pack packaging enables a 70 to 75% reduction in plastic compared to standard delicatessen packaging. Volpi Foods is working towards a more sustainable future for the pre-sliced meat industry with their Raised Responsibly program and paper-based Eco-Pack packaging – not to mention their food tastes wonderful. Congratulations on being our pick for “Ready-to-Eat Product of the Year”.

About Volpi Foods

The Volpi family emigrated from Milan to Saint-Louis in 1898, bringing with them the ancient European art of cured meats. John Volpi founded Volpi Foods in St. Louis’s iconic Italian neighborhood of The Hill in 1902, and now 119 years later, the fourth-generation family business remains a leader in the specialty food industry. While the family still operates a delicatessen and boutique from the original storefront, consumers can now find Volpi Foods products across the country. The Volpi Foods family is committed to providing high quality products to its consumers by preserving the ancient art of hand cured meat and fostering partnerships with local farmers to source fresh Raised Responsibly™ meat. This means no steroids, no gestation cages, a predominantly vegetarian diet, and the freedom to roam and socialize naturally. High quality meat starts at the source.
